South Dakota
June 20, 2008
Carleton’s finals were last week (it’s over! hooray!) and since my girlfriend had spent the term in Paris, she came to visit me for a little bit at the end of the term. Once we’d packed everything I own into six medium-sized boxes we hopped in the car and started driving for South Dakota, where the buffalo roam. It was my first time visiting the Midwest (besides Minnesota) and I really enjoyed seeing the Badlands, the buffalo, and the generally gorgeous landscapes. Kristine’s grandparents were nice enough to let us stay there, so it didn’t break the bank.
Our first day was spent hiking Custer State Park and visiting the buffalo, antelope, prairie dogs, and other miscellaneous wildlife.
The next day, we got out to the Crazy Horse Memorial near Mt. Rushmore. As the name implies, the memorial is being constructed in honor of the Native American leader and, when finished, will be the largest sculpture in the world. Even now it stands imposing and tall dwarfing Rushmore with ease. While we visited there was a Lakota war dance demonstration that both Kristine and I enjoyed immensely.
With two short days gone by it was time to pack up and head for Omaha. There was, however, one last stop: the Badlands. Even with the midday sun beating down on us, they were still a nice site to end the trip.
